Hintly Privacy Policy
Last Updated: October 5, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains what data Hintly collects, how it is used, who it is shared with and the choices you have. It covers the Hintly Chrome extension, its service and this website.
1. Data Collection
Hintly collects the following types of data:
- Google account: When you sign in with Google, Hintly receives your name, email address, profile picture link and Google account identifier. These identify your Hintly account.
- Call captions: While Hintly is switched on in a Google Meet call, it asks Meet to send it the call's live captions, even if captions are hidden on your screen. Captions include what people say and the display names of the people speaking. Recent caption text is sent to Hintly's server to decide whether something is worth a hint and to write it. Hintly's server never stores or logs caption text.
- Participant names: Meet shares the display names of the people on the call with your browser. Hintly keeps them in the page to label who is speaking. They only leave your browser as part of captions, while Hintly is on.
- In-call memory: When a call mentions people, projects or other things specific to you, the AI models write short notes about them. The notes are kept in your browser's memory for the length of the call and sent back with later captions, so hints can use them. They are cleared when the call ends and are never stored by Hintly's server.
- Usage: Hintly records how much call time you have used with Hintly on, how many hints it has written, and when you last used it, so it can apply your plan's allowance and limits.
- Subscription: If you subscribe to Pro, Hintly stores your plan, your billing period dates and the customer and subscription identifiers from its payment provider, Polar. Hintly never receives or stores your payment card details.
- Technical data: Signing in records your IP address and browser details with Hintly's sign-in provider, and Hintly's service providers keep request logs, such as IP addresses and times, for a limited period for security and troubleshooting.
- Local data: Your sign-in session (including your email address), whether Hintly is switched on, the caption language and whether you have seen the low-time notice are stored on your device using Chrome's storage. If you sign in on the account page at hintly.tips, that session is stored in your browser's storage for this website.
Note: Hintly does not sell your personal information and does not use it for advertising.
2. How Data Is Used and Why
- Showing hints and reminders from what is said in a call, to provide the service you asked for.
- Running your account and subscription: signing you in, applying your trial or Pro allowance, and keeping your plan in sync with Polar, to provide the service and meet the agreement you have with Hintly.
- Security and preventing abuse: per-minute limits and request logs, based on the legitimate interest of keeping the service working and fair.
Other people on your calls are not Hintly users. Their speech and display names are processed only to show you hints during the call, based on the legitimate interest of providing what you asked for, and are not kept afterwards.
3. Data Sharing
Hintly shares data only with the services it needs to work:
- Supabase hosts Hintly's sign-in, database and server. Your account, usage, subscription and technical records are stored there.
- OpenRouter routes caption text and in-call notes to the AI models that write hints: Typesafe (Jev, which decides whether a hint is needed) and Google (Gemini, which writes it). These providers process the text to return a result and may keep it for a limited period under their own policies.
- Polar processes subscription payments as the merchant of record. When you start checkout, Hintly sends Polar your name, email address and Hintly account identifier. Polar keeps its own billing records under its privacy policy at polar.sh/legal/privacy-policy.
- Google handles sign-in when you choose Continue with Google.
4. International Transfers
Some of these providers process data outside the United Kingdom, including in the United States. Where that happens, Hintly relies on the safeguards those providers offer for international transfers, such as standard contractual clauses.
5. Data Storage & Retention
- Caption text and in-call notes: Not stored by Hintly. They exist only for the call and the moment it takes to write a hint.
- Account, usage and subscription records: Kept for as long as you have a Hintly account. Deleting your account removes them. A one-way hash of your email address is kept indefinitely so a new account with the same email does not get another free trial. Polar keeps its own billing records as required by law.
- Technical logs: Kept by Hintly's service providers for a limited period.
- Local data: Signing out removes your session. Everything else stays on your device until you uninstall Hintly.
6. Other People on Your Calls
Hintly asks Google Meet for the call's captions while it is on. You are responsible for using Hintly in a way that respects the people you speak with and any rules that apply to your calls, including your organization's policies and local laws.
7. Your Rights
You can delete your account at any time from the account page at hintly.tips/account. You can also ask to access, correct, delete or receive a copy of your personal data, or object to how it is used. Email support@hintly.tips and your request will be handled promptly. If you are unhappy with how your data is handled, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
8. Changes to this Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy may be updated from time to time. Changes are posted on this page with a new "Last Updated" date. Please review it periodically.
